The Sheffield Shield comes to Townsville in November

The myFootDr Queensland Bulls will play Western Australia in a Sheffield Shield match at Townsville’s Tony Ireland Stadium starting on Saturday 26 November. The round four clash will be the first Shield match staged at the venue, which has previously hosted domestic T20 and one-day matches, as well as One Day Internationals, international first class matches and youth international games.

Entry to the match will be free, and Townsville Cricket have cleared the weekend of local fixtures so all cricket players and participants can come along to cheer on the Bulls.

Interim Queensland Cricket Chief Executive Officer Michael Kasprowicz congratulated the Townsville City Council on securing a Sheffield Shield fixture for the region.

“It is exciting to be able to bring a Shield match to Tony Ireland Stadium this season, which in a way completes the picture domestically for the venue after previously hosting one-day and T20 fixtures,’’ he said.

“The Sheffield Shield is one of Australia’s oldest competitions and boasts a strong and lasting tradition. The highly competitive environment featuring the Bulls and the other State teams means it forms an important element in Australian Cricket’s overall playing strength.”

“Tony Ireland Stadium has proven itself to be of international standard many times over and we look forward to further developing our association with the venue and Townsville. We believe this match will complement the excellent work done by Townsville Cricket and its many volunteers and workers and can only benefit the continued growth of the game in the area.”

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said Townsville was continuing to prove itself on a national and international level in cricketing circles.

“Hosting international cricket such as this is important for Townsville’s growing reputation as a regional sporting hub and further developing local cricket,” Cr Hill said.

“Having this event in Townsville is a major win for the city and makes this the 10th international cricket series the city has secured since 2007.

“Events such as this inject money into the region and offer spectators exciting, top level competition.

“We hope hosting these games will lead to more elite sporting events in Townsville in the near future.”
