A stunning start to the season by talented Sub Parks batsman Riley Ward saw Riley named the Sam Scuderi Medallist -Townsville Cricketer of the Year at the associations awards night held last night. Riley had a stellar start to the season scoring 571 runs at an average of 142 in the 8 matches Riley played at the start of the season before moving in January to WA for the opportunity to further his cricket endeavours. Riley had polled enough votes to hold off his fellow Sub Parks team mates Jamie Heit and Sean Denaher to win the prestigious award.
Sub Parks club continued to collect awards through the night winning the Club Championship for 2013/14 season and saw young bowler Justin Dixon named the Townsville Cricket Colt of the Year.
The night also saw Peter Wilshire and Bob Farrell awarded Life Membership of Townsville Cricket for services to the game and association.
While Cyclone Ita played its hand last weekend with rain cancelling the final series and bringing the season to a damp end, “the overall season was a good season for cricket in Townsville” said Peter Raffles, President of Townsville Cricket. “ the season saw a growth in junior and senior team and closeness in the competition saw the spots in the final series not sorted till the last rounds” . “the strength of cricket in Townsville has also been shown through the number of players from the region achieving high representative honours with local players achieving Australian and Queensland selections throughout the year” Peter said.
